A Global History of the Second World War

 

 

 

Since a couple of years global history has become a new and established discipline in history writing. It is not identical with the history of globalization, but it is strongly connected with it. The course will analyse typical examples and ask the question, whether the writing of global history opens new perspectives. The course deals with the following examples: Globalization and global history: circumnavigating terms; Globalization: The Early Modern period and the three waves in the 20th century; Imperialism, Colonialism, and Decolonization; Banking and Finance; Global environmental history; You are never alone! Microbes, diseases, and global history; Global migration; Global violence: Ethnic cleansing, genocide, and the genocide convention; Exporting democracy? The democratic peace controversy.
