The aim of this module is to introduce chosen topics from the history of health and medicine in Bohemia in the nineteenth century. Students will get to know the beginnings of the state-organized healthcare, its regulation as well as the aspiration of state to eradicate the superstitious beliefs and folk medicine. This module will also present the fundamental role of education and the importance of scientific and technological progress for the development of medicine. After a general introduction to the issue, the lectures will focus on specific topics related to health and the most widespread diseases of the 19th century – mental health, obstetrics, cholera, prostitution and syphilis, tuberculosis, and urban sanitation.
