Anotace - angličtina
The aim of this module is to introduce chosen topics from the history of health and medicine in Bohemia in the nineteenth century. Students will get to know the beginnings of the state-organized healthcare, its regulation as well as the aspiration of state to eradicate the superstitious beliefs and folk medicine. This module will also present the fundamental role of education and the importance of scientific and technological progress for the development of medicine. After a general introduction to the issue, the lectures will focus on specific topics related to health and the most widespread diseases of the 19th century – mental health, obstetrics, cholera, prostitution and syphilis, tuberculosis, and urban sanitation. This module will take place in the form of lectures with an accompanying discussion.

The examination will consist of an oral exam based on a presented list of read literature.

1/ Introduction, presentation of the module, presentation of the assessment method, historiographical and methodological introduction.

2/ Enlightenment – the state enters the healthcare sector

3/ The body and the change in the perception of physicality (presenting the change in the perception of the human body; human body between faith and science)

4/ Teaching and education (presentation of changes in education and training of future doctors; monopolization of medical knowledge on the grounds of medical faculties; campaign against superstitious beliefs)

5/ Healthcare facilities and institutions (presentation of reforms and legislation; specialization of individual workplaces)

6/ Mental health (presentation of the development and change of outlook on mental health; presentation of the institutional embedding of care for the mentally ill; presentation of the treatment of the mentally ill)

7/ Obstetrics (presentation of changes in obstetrics; presentation of efforts to control midwives)

8/ Cholera (presentation of the disease; pandemic in the 19th century; presentation of treatment and state response)

9/ Prostitution and syphilis (the state’s fights against prostitution, syphilis and other venereal diseases)
