Kurs se věnuje integračním i dezintegračním procesům na evropském kontinentě v oblasti politické, hospodářské, společenské i kulturní. Kurs se zaobírá zejména myšlenkou evropanství a vytvářením společných identit a propojuje toto téma s dějinami institucionálních integrací i dezintegrací. Kurs se zaobírá kořeny evropské identity v evropském křesťanském universalismu a ve vztahu k neevropským územím. Předmět se nezaměřuje pouze na současně nejúspěšnější integrační model – Evropskou unii a její předchůdce – ale také na alternativy a protichůdné síly, které k integraci na různých úrovních přispívaly – například integraci na úrovni socialistického bloku, vizi integrované Evropy pod nacistickým panstvím, koloniální projekty, transblokovou integraci a další.
