Konec osmnáctého a první polovina devatenáctého století představovala pro Skotsko období rozkvětu. Poté, co vojenské konflikty s Anglií skončily pro Skotsko fiaskem, začali Skoti soupeřit se zbytkem Spojeného království v intelektuální a ekonomické rovině. Brzy se Edinburgh začal pyšnit titulem Athény severu, zatímco Glasgow a jiná větší skotská města nabývala čím dál většího ekonomického významu. Roku 1822 (v souvislosti s návštěvou krále Jiřího IV.) ve Skotsku vyvrcholilo národní hnutí, které paradoxně vedlo k usmíření s Anglií. Kurz bude zahájen přehledem skotských dějin od vrcholného středověku až po nástup královny Viktorie na trůn. V dalších hodinách bude představena sociální situace v tehdejším Skotsku, svébytnosti jednotlivých regionů, sociální rozdíly, otázky a problémy. Řeč bude také o tehdejší skotské vědě, zejména medicíně (Skotsko se stalo centrem lékařského pokroku a výuky medicíny), filozofii, vzdělanosti, církvích, univerzitách, právu a jeho protipólu - kriminálnímu podsvětí. Závěrem se bude seminář věnovat skotskému národnímu hnutí, na který měla velký vliv literatura, tehdy celosvětově nejúspěšnější spisovatel Sir Walter Scott se stal i vůdčí osobností hnutí.
