This lecture course will discuss, chapter by chapter and stage of consciousness by stage of consciousness, Robert Brandom’s monumental 2019 book A Spirit of Trust, which offers a very idiosyncratic reading of Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit. Like Hegel’s original work, A Spirit of Trust covers pretty much all areas of philosophy, including the philosophy of language, epistemology, metaphysics, philosophy of logic, philosophy of mind, philosophy of action, the philosophy of history, and the history of philosophy. Willingness to do the preparatory readings and regularly attending the lectures are absolutely vital to pass this course. No previous knowledge about Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit is necessary. Your final grade (either pass/fail or an actual grade) will be based on (1) two small essays written during the semester (pass/fail or 20% per essay), and (2) an oral exam at the end of the semester (pass/fail or 60% of the final grade). The essays are 1000-1500 words long and contain a discussion of one of the topics discussed during the semester. If an essay is not of sufficient quality, the student can be asked to improve the essay and resubmit it on the basis of a feedback report. The oral exam (+/- 20min) will test the student’s knowledge about Brandom’s A Spirit of Trust and the student’s ability to critically engage with it. The students’ essays might be mentioned and discussed during the oral exam. Poslední úprava: Heyndels Sybren, BcA., M.A., Ph.D. (29.01.2025)
