In this advanced seminar, we will read and discuss some of the most important writings by the American philosopher Wilfrid Sellars (1912-1989) and some philosophers influenced by him. Sellars is one of the most important philosophers of the 20th century and has contributed to a huge variety of philosophical subdisciplines, including the philosophy of language, the philosophy of mind, the history of philosophy, metaphilosophy, epistemology and meta-ethics. We will read some of his main works, including his ‘Philosophy and the Scientific Image of Man’ and his major work Empiricism and the Philosophy of Mind. In the last three sessions of the seminar, we will take a look at texts by three contemporary philosophers who are influenced by Sellars. Attendance will be registered. More than three absences (starting from the first session after the deadline for course registration) will result in not passing the course. Students are required (1) to give one (10-15min) presentation about one of the texts discussed in the seminar, (2) to write an essay of approximately 4000 words, and (3) to answer some questions about their essay during a 15-minute oral defence. Students will receive detailed feedback on an abstract of their paper and a fragment of 2000 words during the semester. For further information about the paper and oral defence, see the ‘Paper Guidelines and Evaluation Criteria’ document on Moodle. Poslední úprava: Heyndels Sybren, BcA., M.A., Ph.D. (29.01.2025)

This is an MA course. BA philosophy students are welcome when they can show a strong motivation to do so, but the seminar will be an advanced MA seminar, so more background knowledge is presupposed, and the level of discussion will be more demanding. Non-philosophy students may request to join the course but will only be accepted if they can demonstrate sufficient background knowledge and a very strong motivation to do the necessary work.
