1. General Description and Aims of the Module

With no doubts, “phenomenology” and “Marxism” are two of the most important and influential philosophical traditions of the 20th century. The present module wants to explore some of the intersections between them, whether of positive or critical nature. We will explore the possibility of combining phenomenology (whether of Husserlian variety, Heideggerian nature or other) with some of the main tenets of Marxism (e.g., with the concept of dialectics, or its historical materialism) as well as the reasons for deeming the two absolutely incompatible. Is Marxism a philosophy strictu sensu? Should it be considered a philosophy of history? Or an organon for understanding society? Can phenomenology contribute to elucidate ontologically some of the fundamental concepts and assumptions of Marxism? What sort of Marxism should we take into account?

We will read texts/contributions on/by Herbert Marcuse and Georgy Lukacs, Martin Heidegger and Lucien Goldmann, Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Michel Henry, Ian Angus, Tran Dun Thao and Mario Tronti.

(1) Participation (which includes, yet is not limited to: attendance, in-class active participation). If you are absent, please ask your classmates for any assignments or key discussion materials missed.
