Anotace

Language planning and language policy (LPP) are disciplines that belong to the field of sociology of language. First, several key concepts are introduced and classical and more modern research approaches/paradigms are compared (LPP, language management). Then, overviews of the situation of the relevant language communities are presented (German, Dutch, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, and Finnish). The division into status planning, corpus planning, and acquisition planning is taken into account.
Participants are expected to study the seminar texts and to prepare a presentation on a selected topic. The presentation will consist of a summary of the relevant literature, of data collection, data evaluation and data interpretation embedded in a theoretical framework. Depending on the total number of participants, groups may be formed. These activities may serve as a basis for potential master’s theses.

Cíl předmětu

Participants will learn about the classification of language planning and policy within the sociology of language and gain a basic overview of the linguistic situation in the Germanic and Northern European language areas. They will learn selected research methods from this field, which they will try out in practice in the area of data collection, evaluation, and interpretation.
