CONTEMPORARY FICTION COMING OUT OF SMALL PRESSES: A CRITICAL WORKSHOP
Elective M.A. Course (Wed 15.50-17.20); Program in Critical & Cultural Theory; Department of Anglophone Literatures and Cultures (Room 111) This seminar examines the role of contemporary small presses in shaping radical and experimental literature after 2020. Working with books from eight independent publishers active across the Anglophone world, students will investigate how small presses operate as spaces of innovation outside mainstream publishing, fostering alternative literary communities and aesthetic agendas. The course combines close reading of selected works with critical study of publishing strategies, design, distribution, and editorial vision. Students will develop their skills as critics by writing reviews, preparing presentations, and producing a final comparative paper on two presses. Emphasis will be placed on connecting literary analysis to the broader material and cultural conditions of contemporary publishing. The goal of the course will be not only to cover and evaluate what is currently “out there,” but to produce hands-on critical research on the contemporary publishing scene: reviewing books, interviewing authors and publishers, writing critical pieces on the publishing plan, “politics” & “poetics” of selected houses, etc. Final research papers will be framed with view towards their publication. Work in the seminar includes two brief in-class presentations on individual books, a concluding roundtable discussion, and a short comparative paper on two books covered during the course, or a research comparative paper on the politics and poetics of two selected small presses.
