Seminář studenty seznámí se základními aspekty kvantitativního výzkumu v aplikované lingvistice. Studenti budou pracovat s publikovanými empirickými studiemi na široké spektrum témat (akvizice slovní zásoby, technologie ve výuce, hodnocení studentů, individuální rozdíly mezi žáky včetně motivace a autonomie, poslech, čtení, psaní a mluvení), které se naučí kriticky číst a hodnotit. Studenti budou moci výběr témat studií ovlivnit během semestru podle svého zájmu. Po absolvování semináře by studenti měli být schopni orientovat se v základní problematice kvantitativního výzkumu, psát recenze kvantitativních studií a navrhovat jejich replikační studie. Seminář nevyžaduje žádné předchozí matematické nebo statistické znalosti. Seminář bude veden v anglickém jazyce.

This introductory course invites students to explore quantitative research methods in applied linguistics. Students will read, describe, analyse and critique published empirical studies covering a wide range of topics, such as vocabulary acquisition, the use of technologies in second language acquisition, assessment and testing, individual differences among learners including motivation and learner autonomy, listening, reading, writing and speaking. Student will have an opportunity to influence the selection of topics based on their own research interests. Upon a successful completion of the course, students will be familiar with the fundamentals of quantitative research and will be able to critically review quantitative studies and design replication studies. Background in mathematics or statistics is not required. The course will be conducted in the English language.

Požadavky ke zkoušce -
Studenti musí splnit následující podmínky:
1. Aktivní účast na hodinách
a. Pravidelná účast (maximálně 3 absence)
b. Průběžné plnění zadaných úkolů (minimálně 75 %):
i. kritické čtení odborných studií před jednotlivými hodinami tak, aby byla diskuse během semináře smysluplná
ii. vypracování recenzí v rozsahu 200-400 slov
iii. aktivní účast v diskusích během semináře NEBO v diskusním fóru v Moodlu
2. Zápočtová práce v rozsahu maximálně 2500 slov na JEDNO z následujících témat:
a. Recenze odborné empirické studie a návrh replikační studie
b. Srovnání dvou odborných empirických studií z hlediska validity
Zápočtová práce musí splňovat formální i obsahová kritéria odborné práce včetně bibliografie a správných citačních norem.

Credit requirements
To obtain a credit for the course, the following is required:
1. Active participation
a. Regular attendance (no more than 3 absences)
b. Completion of at least 75% of assignments, which includes:
i. critical reading of empirical studies prior to each lessons to ensure a meaningful discussion
ii. writing critiques of 200-400 words
iii. contributions to discussions during lessons OR to discussion forums in Moodle
2. Submission of an essay of no more than 2500 words on ONE of the following topics:
a. A description and critique of an empirical study and a replication study proposal
b. A comparison of two empirical studies in terms of their validity
The essay must respect academic conventions including referencing and citing sources.
