Modul se zabývá základními tendencemi v procesu formování americké literatury. Kombinuje historický a literární přístup s hlavním důrazem na puritánskou tradici, literární díla období revoluce a na jejich nejvýznamnější představitele. Tento modul také studentům poskytuje základní informace o politických a historických rysech americké kultury 17. a 18. století.
seminář:
Analýza vybraných kanonických děl americké literatury 17., 18. a 19. století se zaměřuje jak na jednotlivé texty, tak na širší otázky: historický a politický kontext, společenské a kulturní změny. Hlavní důraz se klade na puritánské dědictví, federalismus, romantismus, transcendentalismus a poezii Walta Whitmana a Emily Dickinsonové.

LECTURE:
Colonial Period and the Revolution (Procházka, 8 weeks)
The course traces general tendencies in the process of establishing American literature. It combines historical and literary approaches with the main focus on the Puritan tradition and the literary achievements of the Revolution, and their most important representatives. The course also provides the students with elementary information about the political and historical aspects of American culture of 17th and 18th century.
SEMINAR:
OBJECTIVES
This seminar will study in some detail works by seven key writers and thinkers and the movements they helped to spawn in early American literary and cultural history. Some outstanding critical and theoretical work will also be used.

ASSESSMENT
To receive credit for the seminar students will be required to have no more than three absences, to give one oral presentation, and to produce three short papers (2 pp. maximum), each of which must earn a mark of C- or higher. Topics for the essays will be distributed in the weeks noted below.
