Existenci vícehlasého zpěvu lze v hudební historii doložit hlouběji, než se obvykle předpokládá – cca. od poloviny 9. století. Od této doby až do počátku novověku prošla vícehlasá hudba a její reflexe nesmírně dynamickým vývojem. Právě na poli vícehlasu se od vrcholného středověku utvářely principy, na nichž mohla stavět tvorba pozdějších epoch. Přednáška by chtěla naznačit proměny tohoto hudebního fenoménu v průběhu středověku, tj. jeho „bouřlivou“ cestu od improvizační praxe prvních staletí přes první teoretické úvahy o kontrapunktu až k promyšleným kompozicím 14. století.
Předmět může být vyučován v angličtině, a to v závislosti na rozhodnutí garanta.

The existence of polyphonic singing can be documented in musical history deeper than usually assumed - from about the end of the 9th century. From this time until the early modern period, polyphonic music and its reflection underwent an extremely dynamic development. It was in the field of polyphony that, from the High Middle Ages onwards, the principles on which the work of later epochs could be built were established. The course would like to outline the transformations of this musical phenomenon during the Middle Ages, i.e. its "turbulent" journey from the improvisatory practice of the first centuries through the first theoretical reflections on counterpoint to the sophisticated compositions of the 14th century.
