    Charge for the admission procedure

    Information on the admission procedure: Applications for studies are submitted in paper form on the relevant form sent to the address of the faculty or in electronic form by means of the university online system. Applications that are submitted electronically no longer have to be printed and sent by post.

    Applicants must send to the Faculty address the completed form Application to Study at a Higher Education Institution (if they fill in the application form on paper), and they must also send a short CV, an authenticated copy of their secondary school leaving certificate (if the applicant has already completed their secondary school education), and proof of payment of the administration fee for the admission procedure.
    Applicants for the field of studies Theology of Christian Traditions must also send a letter of motivation together with the other documents.
    It is also possible (and recommended) to complete the application form electronically.
    The application code that is generated should be used as the “variable symbol” (for identifying who sent the money) when paying the administration fee.


    Under Art. 4 (5) of the Admissions Procedure Code of Charles University, the faculty is to send to an applicant the invitation to the exam along with the notification of its rules, no later than thirty days before the exam is being held. If the faculty sends an invitation to an alternative entrance examination date, said time period may be shortened accordingly. A password to log into the electronic information system is obtained by an applicant after the applicant has submitted the application to study.

    The dean may grant an opportunity to sit for an examination on an alternative date to an applicant who has so applied in writing no later than three days after the date of the regular examination, provided that the applicant is/was not able to take part in the regular examination for serious and proven reasons, mainly health reasons. Regular study abroad as preparation for study at a higher education institution is an obligatory reason for granting an alternative date. No further alternative date is permissible.

    For applicants who passed the “maturita” school-leaving examination in the autumn, for applicants for which a decision was not issued by 30 September 2024 on their application filed for recognition of foreign education, and for applicants who prove the fulfilment of the requirement of secondary education completed with a “maturita” examination under section 48 (4) of the Higher Education Act, the period for verification of the fulfilment of admission requirements (i.e., including the requirements verified based on documents such as “maturita” certificate) must end by 22 October 2024. (Rector’s Measure No. 13/2023, 8).
    Application form requisites: The admissions procedure starts with the submission of the application to the institute of higher education. In the application form applicants must give their first name or names; surname; birth identification number, if they have one; and the address of permanent residence in the Czech Republic, or the address of residence outside the Czech Republic. Applicants who are not Czech citizens must also give their date of birth, sex, address in the Czech Republic, and state citizenship. Only the applicant whose application for studies is being submitted is a participant in the admissions procedure.

    The applicant who has completed previous studies at a foreign secondary school shall submit one of the following documents in order to prove his/her prior education: a document proving general recognition of the equivalence or validity of a foreign document in the Czech Republic (socalled “nostrification”), or a document proving the awarding of a European Baccalaureate, or a document concerning a foreign secondary education completed with the “maturita” examination, if it is deemed automatically equivalent in the Czech Republic in accordance with its international agreements without any further administrative procedures – these are documents proving obtainment of the equivalent of Czech “maturita” in Slovakia, Poland, Hungary and Slovenia), or a foreign document concerning a foreign secondary education (the document will be assessed by the faculty, the fee is CZK 930).

    A certificate of your English language skills to B2 level or higher. This is not necessary if it can be seen from your secondary school leaving certificate or your bachelor's degree that you studied that programme in English.

    A personal letter of application setting out your motivation and your reasons for wishing to study Protestant theology in Prague.

    The entrance examination takes the form of an interview, during which applicants have to defend the proposal for their research project before the admition commision.

    On the basis of the recommendation of the subject-area board the Dean of the Faculty decides on whether applicants will be admitted to study.

    Under Art. 4 (5) of the Admissions Procedure Code of Charles University, the faculty is to send to an applicant the invitation to an entrance examination through the University Electronic Information System not later than 30 days before the date of the examination. Should the faculty send an invitation for an alternative date of the entrance examination this period may be shortened accordingly.     The period for verification of the fulfilment of admission requirements including verification of completion of the required education under section 48 of the Higher Education Act is set for bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programmes of study I up to 30 September 2024.     For applicants for which a decision was not issued by 30 September 2024 on their application filed for recognition of foreign education, and for applicants who prove the fulfilment of the requirement of completion of study in a master’s programme of study under section 48 (5) of the Higher Education Act, the period for verification of the fulfilment of admission requirements (i.e., including the requirements verified based on documents such as university diploma) must end by 22 October 2024. The same period for verification of the fulfilment of admission requirements is also set for applicants for admission to doctoral programmes of study I who completed study in a bachelor’s or master’s programme of study in the period from 1 to 30 September 2024, for the case of substantiating the required education under section 48 (3) of the Higher Education Act.     General information

    Doors open day - note: January 22, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 5. p.m.
    Information on the faculty: Postgraduate doctoral studies at the Protestant Theological Faculty are offered in one of the following four programmes: Biblical Theology; Historical and Systematic Theology; Practical and Ecumenical Theology and Theological Ethics; and Philosophy of Religion. Doctoral programmes can be studied in either Czech, English, or German.
    Postgraduate doctoral studies consist of research activity leading towards a written dissertation, broadening and deepening the student's knowledge in the field of study, and mastering the techniques of academic work. Students are also required to attend certain lectures, seminars or convocations, pass an examination in a second language, write various papers, reviews, or literature searches, pass three examinations in theological disciplines, and publish articles in specialist journals. Customary students are obliged to spend one semester of their study at one of the partner institutions abroad. Students who fulfil requirements of their individual study plan, and successfully submit and defend their dissertation, are awarded the title of Ph.D. by Charles University in Prague.
    The normal length of postgraduate doctoral studies is four years.
