Annotation
Essentials of Surgery present to students the first theoretical knowledge in surgical propaedeutic by practical exercises. Students are informed about history of surgical specializations and their development, basic principles and terms in surgical clinical practice, methodology of surgical therapy, surgical instruments and aids and related anatomical and biological principles and surgical treatment. There are also information about the basic system of organization of surgical workplaces and interdisciplinary cooperation. Teaching is based on acquiring basic surgical practical skills. The subject is taught under the new code FGP033.

Aim of the course

The aim by study (subject Essentials of Surgery I):

The student will acquire theoretical and practical knowledge and skills in the area of:

- surgical patient examination, preoperative examination

- laboratory and imaging methods in surgery, documentation in surgery

- preparation of surgical group and operation field, surgical procedures, surgical instruments, rules of movement on the operating theatre

- pre-operative preparation of the patient, general surgical procedures

- infection, local, total, nosocomial, basic principles of antibiotic therapy, disinfection, sterilization, aseptic and antiseptic principles

Requirements to the exam

Credit

  • A credit will be given on a base of 100% attendance at practical training.
  • Students must notify the Academic Department of Surgery of an any absence in a timely manner. The head of the department decides how the missed exercise will be replaced.

In the case of repeating a subject, the student is required to complete all academic obligations in their entirety.

Students in exchange programs (Erasmus, etc.) must complete the study obligation in full.

Themes of the practical exercises

  1. Surgical patient examination. Preoperative examination.
  2. Laboratory and imaging methods in surgery. Documentation in surgery.
  3. Preparation of surgical group and operation field. Surgical procedures, surgical instruments. Rules of movement on the operating theatre.
  4. Pre-operative preparation of the patient. General surgical procedures.
  5. Infection, local, total, nosocomial. Basic principles of antibiotic therapy. Disinfection, sterilization, aseptic and antiseptic principles.

It is necessary to have: suitable shoes, a clean white coat and a name tag (without this, students can be excluded from the practical lesson)!

Detailed description and division of students into groups (see the schedule board on the ground floor opposite the elevators, Bedrna's pavilion, building No. 21, Dept. of Surgery).

Students will look for a specific teacher according to the schedule at the departments.
