The linguistic part of the course focuses on introducing language as a supreme structure, tool of communication, fundament of human existence and social phenomenon - concerning its specific, as well as universal properties.
The aim of the literary part of the course is to introduce students to unique qualities of literary language and familiarize them with the basic terms and categories of literary studies as well the specific features of fiction, poetry and drama. The main focus is put on the development of students’ ability to analyse a selection of texts from literature written in English from the point of view of their formal structure.

Zkouška má podobu písemného testu, v němž studenti prokážou schopnost analyzovat a interpretovat texty z perspektivy aplikace literárních i jazykovědných poznatků. Pro úspěšné splnění musí výsledek testu dosahovat minimální hodnoty 70% v souhrnném hodnocení obou částí, tj. jak lingvistické, tak literární. Student má k dispozici jeden řádný a dva opravné termíny. Součástí hodnocení je i jazyková a formulační úroveň.
