The subject provides knowledge about the status of phytopharmaceuticaůs in the current therapy and usability of drugs of this type in the treatment of various pathological conditions. It provides information on the effect of drug substances, standardized extracts that are forming part of such preparations. The course is also focused on the practical use of individual products in the practice of pharmacists. Attention is also paid to possible interactions with chemically unified drugs. The subject assumes knowledge of pharmacognosis, pharmacology, toxicology and pharmaceutical chemistry.

Phytopharmaceuticals course builds on the knowledge and skills acquired in Organic Chemistry I and II, Pharmaceutical Botany I and II, Pharmacognosy I and II, and Pharmacology I and II. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to understand and apply the following terms (including their commonly used abbreviations) in the correct context related to the evaluation and practical use of phytopharmaceuticals: natural-origin medicines, nutraceuticals, medical devices, bioactive compounds, extracts, tinctures, standardization, quality control, regulatory framework, EMA, FDA, SÚKL, EFSA, herbal medicinal products, clinical studies, pharmacovigilance.
