Urology – Course Syllabus

4th Year Clinical Rotation
First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University in Prague

Course Overview

Urology is one of the first clinical subjects introduced in the fourth year of the General Medicine program at the First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University. The course is structured as a two-week clinical rotation, comprising a total of 50 hours (2 × 25 hours).

Course Structure

Week 1 – Theoretical Instruction

During the first week, students participate in daily, on-site theoretical seminars. These include illustrative case studies and focused discussions on core urological topics.
The week concludes on Friday with practical training in urinary bladder catheterization and hands-on instruction in urological ultrasonography.

Week 2 – Clinical Training

The second week is dedicated to practical training. Students are assigned to one of several clinical sites, where they gain direct experience in:

  • Outpatient clinics
  • Operating theatres
  • Ward-based patient care

Each student completes their placement at a single hospital to ensure personalized instruction and deeper engagement in clinical activities.
The quality of teaching and attendance requirements are standardized across all participating institutions.

Clinical Training Sites

  • Department of Urology First Faculty of Medicine Charles University and General University Hospital in Prague (Urologická klinika 1. LF UK a VFN)

·         Department of Urology First Faculty of Medicine Charles University and Military University Hospital Prague (Urologická klinika 1.LF UK a ÚVN)

1.     Obtain credit for attendance (both weeks)

2.     Successfully complete the MCQ test, in accordance with the following rules:

o    Two attempts are allowed

o    Test results contribute to the final exam evaluation

MCQ Test Information

The multiple-choice test (MCQ) is designed to assess the knowledge acquired during the course. Although it is not part of the final examination, it is a mandatory prerequisite for participation.

  • The MCQ test takes place on the same day as the oral exam, immediately beforehand
  • By registering for an exam date in SIS, students automatically confirm participation in the MCQ test
  • The test is conducted via the Moodle system and consists of:
    • 10 single-answer questions
    • A passing score of at least 70%
    • Two attempts, which must be taken on separate days

If a student fails the first attempt, they cannot proceed to the exam on that day.
The exam registration remains valid.
If the student fails the second attempt, they may still take the oral exam, but the failed result will be considered in the overall evaluation.

Final Examination

  • The final examination consists of a single component: an oral exam
  • Examination dates begin on Friday of the second week of the course and continue into the following week
  • Registration in SIS is binding; however, obtaining credit is not required to register

Examinations are typically held at the Urology Clinic of the First Faculty of Medicine and General University Hospital (VFN).
Early Friday exam dates may also be conducted at the Military University Hospital (ÚVN), depending on the registered term.

The course is considered successfully completed upon passing the oral examination.
