The study programme in “Egypt and the Near East in Ancient Times” explores ancient history and the spiritual as well as material culture of the region, which combine to form one of the pillars and sources of contemporary Euro-American civilization.

Graduate profile for the public:
The graduate of the specialization Egyptology knows the history, problems and methods of the archaeology of the region of ancient Egypt, understands the problems of the society of ancient Egypt, knows the development and methodology of analyzing ancient Egyptian material culture, is well acquainted with the history of ancient Egypt from the 3rd millennium BC to the Roman Period, has a good awareness of current problems and methodological approaches to the religion of ancient Egypt, is proficient in the grammar and writing systems of Middle Egyptian, Late Egyptian and Demotic, and understands the development of complex societies on a general level. The graduate can read and interpret ancient Egyptian texts, take part at excavations in Egypt and the Sudan and document and interpret objects of the material culture of ancient Egypt.

The graduate of the specialization Assyriology knows the history, problems and methods of the archaeology of the region of the ancient Near East, understands the problems of the society of ancient Near East, knows the development and methodology of analyzing ancient Near Eastern material culture, is well acquainted with the history of ancient Near East, has a good awareness of current problems and methodological approaches to the religion of ancient Near East, is proficient in the grammar and writing systems of at least two languages of the region and understands the development of complex societies on a general level. The graduate can read and interpret Akkadian, Sumerian and Hittite texts, take part at excavations in the region and document and interpret objects of the material culture of the ancient Near East.
