SP characteristics
The Philosophy with a Focus on Education Bachelor’s study programme is designed as the first stage of a two-stage undergraduate program for future philosophy teachers, who, after completing both stages of the program, will be qualified to become philosophy teachers at lower secondary schools, upper secondary schools, and lower secondary level of multi-year grammar schools (and their equivalents), or even to institutions providing adult education.
Graduates of the Bachelor's programme can work in education in lower positions (e.g., as teaching assistants). To obtain full teaching qualifications, it is necessary to continue and successfully complete the follow-up Master's programme in Teaching Philosophy for Upper Secondary Schools.
The programme is based on a competency-based approach to teacher training and aims to provide gradual, comprehensive, and continuous systematic preparation for the teaching profession in terms of achieving the competencies set out in the Competency Framework for Teacher Training Graduates (KRAAU, Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, 2023).
At the Bachelor's level, students focus primarily on building a foundation in the field of philosophy and on developing basic pedagogical, psychological, and didactic competencies that form the necessary basis for further development and refinement in the follow-up Master’s programme aimed at full teaching responsibility.
The study programme is intended for anyone interested in becoming a future philosophy teacher.
The programme is full-time and must be combined with another study program focused on education or with a specialization of the Foreign languages with a Focus on Education study programme.
The programme is taught in Czech.

More details
Graduate profile for the public:
Graduates of the Philosophy with a Focus on Education Bachelor’s degree programme acquire the fundamental disciplinary, didactic and pedagogical foundations that prepare them for further study in a follow-up Master’s programme in teacher education and for their future professional development in the field of education. The programme provides a solid introduction to philosophy while systematically developing skills and competencies essential for the teaching profession.
Disciplinary Profile of the Graduate
In the disciplinary component of the programme, graduates gain a basic orientation in the main philosophical traditions and disciplines. The curriculum focuses in particular on ancient, medieval and modern philosophy, contemporary practical philosophy (ethics and political philosophy), and contemporary theoretical philosophy (epistemology, philosophy of language and philosophy of science). The programme is complemented by introductory courses in selected social sciences taught at upper secondary schools.
Graduates learn to work with philosophical texts and concepts, understand key philosophical questions and approaches to their treatment, and develop the ability to argue clearly and to communicate in a cultivated manner both orally and in writing. The knowledge and skills acquired enable graduates to reflect on current social issues and to place them within broader philosophical contexts.
Subject-Didactic and Pedagogical Profile of the Graduate
The programme contributes to the development of basic subject-didactic competencies related to the teaching of philosophy and closely related social science subjects. Graduates are guided to present philosophical topics in a meaningful and accessible way, to connect them with their students’ experiences and contemporary issues, and to foster independent thinking and the search for well-reasoned answers.
As part of the introductory teacher education component and teaching practice, graduates gain basic experience in lesson planning, teaching and reflection, in creating a supportive learning environment, and in providing feedback to students. The programme also develops graduates’ capacity for self-reflection and awareness of the professional role of the teacher.
Professional Prospects of the Graduate
Graduates of the programme are prepared to continue their studies in a follow-up Master’s programme in teacher education, where they can further deepen their disciplinary, didactic and pedagogical competencies. At the same time, they acquire transferable skills(such as critical work with information, analytical thinking, argumentation and communication) that are applicable in a wide range of fields related to education, culture and public life.
