The discipline-oriented part of the bachelor study programme includes the completion of courses ranging across academic a variety of subdisciplines within linguistics, literary studies and didactics, and also courses which develop language proficiency and intercultural competences, while emphasizing the symbiotic relationship of all these disciplines. The linguistic disciplines foster complex knowledge of the language system of modern English and also its application in professional practice, both language-oriented and educational. The literary studies introduce the students to the historical development of English and American literature, while also cultivating their nuanced reading of literary texts through analysis and interpretation, which in turn also fosters the students’ ability to formulate and present their ideas, a skillset with much wider applications. Literary studies and Anglo-American cultural studies also seek to increase the students’ general awareness, not only boosting their knowledge of the history and culture of English-speaking countries, but also making them more aware of cultural diversity and consequently more accepting of cultural difference. The introductory courses in English didactics aim to acquaint the students with the fundamental English-teaching methodologies and the various ways in which linguistic expertise can be utilized in the classroom. In the area of teaching language and presentation skills, a systematic emphasis is placed on developing all four language skills, so that the college graduate shall achieve a high level of proficiency (at least C1+), and shall be able to express himself/herself in correct, fluent and nuanced English both in the written and spoken form.
The study programme is designed as a first step in preparation for the teaching profession. By means of educational propedeutics, didactics and orientation teaching practice and its reflection, it motivates the graduates of the B.A. study programme to choose the follow-up M.A. programme intended for future teachers.
