SP characteristics

Bioinformatics is a relatively new field with the aim of making sense of the growing number of biological data, it concentrates also on deposition and distribution of biological data. The importance of bioinformatics for basic biological research, drug development, medical diagnostics or agriculture is therefore growing with every sequenced nucleotide and with every solved 3D structure and it is expected to grow further. There will be also a growing demand for experts (bioinformaticians) who can use existing bioinformatics algorithms or develop new ones.
Bioinformatics is a multidisciplinary field that combines biology, statistics and informatics – and this is going to be reflected in the study programme Bioinformatics. Similarly like in our Bc. Study programme in bioinformatics, two faculties of Charles University in Prague – Faculty of Mathematics and Physics and Faculty of Science join their forces to cover the spectrum of expertise needed to teach bioinformatics.d skills on the previously acquired knowledge of biology, mathematic and statistics. However, students will have an opportunity to further develop their knowledge of biology and informatics, mainly in the areas of evolutionary biology and machine learning.

Graduate profile for the public:
A graduate of Msc. degree in bioinformatics knows techniques of data handling and analysis applicable not only to biological data.
The graduate knows and can work with basic bioinformatics databases, algorithms, tools and programme packages. The graduate can work with all major bioinformatics databases, services. The graduate can develop new bioinformatics tools and services.
The graduate can find relevant information, analyze and interpret it - based on it, the graduate can conclude and propose following actions
The graduate has deep programming skills based on solid theoretical grounds.
A unique combination of biological and informatics skills and knowledge allows the graduate to find her/his employment in a development of bionformatics systems that can be used in academia, public sector or industry.
