This module will present three core themes: values in sport, fair play and the ethics of sport, and sporting integrity. The first section, on values in sport, includes discussions on the nature of sport – analytical approaches to the concept of sport; phenomenological analysis of the athlete; investigations of the nature of sporting experience, intrinsic and extrinsic values in sport, and Olympism and its principal humanistic values. The second section, on fair play and the ethics of sport, will focus on foundational issues in the understanding of ethical approaches to the most important problems facing sport as a practical enterprise, as a source of personal value, and as a social institution. We shall especially consider the nature of integrity as applied to sport, and will examine particular issues, such as doping, match-fixing and gambling, and other contemporary ethical issues. The third section will show how all of the above is required background for an understanding of varieties of sporting integrity, such as: Personal integrity: the behaviour of individuals in a sporting context, whether they be players, coaches, referees, administrators, etc. Organizational integrity: the professional integrity of the organization as a whole, as well as the personal integrity of sport administrators, and others working in sport organizations. Procedural integrity: the logic and value of sport as a social practice with a focus on the integrity of the sporting event.
