Final Exam 30%
Attendance: You need to attend all classes and field trips during our summer abroad program. Only serious issues (i.e., health-related issues; need to go to the Embassy) will be considered as an excuse for absences. The lectures presented by Czech Professors may not be available to you electronically, so if you miss a class, you will miss important content.
Participation: You are expected to participate actively during the classes. Even during lectures, you are expected to listen actively and ask questions during or afterwards (depending on the instructor’s preference). During discussion times, you are expected to actively share your views, listen to those of others, respond to others, etc.
Short papers: You will need to write 3 short papers while in Prague, one due each week. Each week, you will be able to choose from at least 2 topics to write about. Each paper needs to be at least 700 words long. In the papers, you should discuss the topic of your choice from your subjective (“I”) perspective. Rather than summarizing what you learned, you should engage with the topic/material in some way: perhaps it is familiar because it is similar to your own experience; perhaps it is shocking; perhaps you want to compare it to a situation in another country, etc. The paper will be graded based on the quality of writing (spelling and grammar matter), the depth of your engagement, the level of your understanding of the material.
Reflection: You need to write a reflection about your stay in Prague. What did the experience mean to you? What did you gain by having this experience, both academically and personally? What would you like to tell a student who is considering this experience at a later time? What would you have changed about the program? This is due 7/3/2019 at noon at jana_sladkova@uml.edu.
Final Exam: This will be a take-home exam. All topics covered in Prague will be on the exam. It will be mostly open-ended questions. It is due 7/10/2019 at noon at jana_sladkova@uml.edu. It will be based on in-Prague lectures and readings.
For UMass Lowell students who are taking the class for 6 credits:
Final Paper: Your final paper will be written on a topic agreed upon between the instructor and each student. It will be based on additional research on a topic of interest which was covered in the course. Minimum of 9 academic sources (approved by instructor) will be used in the final paper. It will be 15 pages long, double spaced, times New Roman 12 pt font. It is due on 7/15/2019 at noon at jana_sladkova@uml.edu.
