Co je základem kultury? Proč je svoboda pro skutečně lidský život člověka důležitá? Jak vést sebe i druhé k tomu, abychom ve svém životě byli více svobodní? To jsou hlavní otázky předmětu Leisure as the Basis of Culture, který je určen studujícím se zájmem o hledání odpovědí na tyto otázky, přičemž hlavním východiskem bude kniha Josefa Piepera s názvem Leisure: The Basis of Culture. Předmět je vyučován pouze v angličtině.

What is the basis of culture? Why is freedom important for a truly human life? How can we lead ourselves and others to be more free in our lives? These are the main questions of the course Leisure as the Basis of Culture, which is designed for students interested in finding answers to these questions, with Josef Pieper's book Leisure: The Basis of Culture as the main starting point.

Cíl předmětu

The aim of the course is to deepen the understanding of the phenomenon of human freedom. Students will be guided by the course content to distinguish between the range of ratio and intellectus, and to appreciate the importance of festivity in human life. The distinction between what is natural and what is cultural in human life will be reflected upon, and the relationships between the cultivation of both will be sought.

Written text, 4-6 pages (1800-2700 words). Students choose a short part from the one philosophical text written by Josef Pieper and write an interpretation of it. The written text must be sent to the email of the teacher, or uploaded into Moodle: https://dl1.cuni.cz/course/view.php?id=15100

Minimal requirements, prerequisites, conditions for selection and enrolment of students: Students can use the internet for MS Teams video meetings, have English as a spoken language - minimum level: B1 - "Can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. Can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken. Can produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest. Can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes & ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans."
