level of genotype and phenotype when investigating the effect of molecules affecting molecular biological and biochemical processes in the cell. This will be explained using the example of research on molecules for targeted cancer therapy and classical chemotherapy. Most of the procedures presented have general applicability to research using cell line models. |

Cell culture is now an indispensable model for both basic and applied research. After a brief historical introduction, the types of cell cultures will be explained. The types of media and the purpose of their use will then be described, as well as basic equipment for tissue culture laboratories. Examples of the application of cell culture in research with emphasis on oncology will be presented. Cultivation of tumor cells will be described with an extensive table of selected tumor cell lines from the American Type Culture Collection, Rockville, Maryland, U.S.A. Specific examples of cancer therapy research and methods for assessing genotypic and phenotypic characteristics of cell lines, including methods of protein and gene expression analysis will be presented. Upon completion of the course, students will be able to perform basic experimental design to affect the given properties of cell lines. |
