Focus is on the common heritage of Indo-European languages, such as it is reflected not only in older strata, but in modern languages, such as Czech, English, German, Spanish, Italian or Greek. The course will cover thr following topics: History and prehistory of Indo-European linguistics (focusing on how European "nations" and speakers perceieved their similarities and what conclusions they drew) Indo-European family: the branches and languages (especially the western branches: Celtic, Balto-Slavic, Germanic, Romance (Italic) and Greek) Shared vocabulary and sound laws lexical comparison Etymology of place names and personal names Proto-Indo-European grammar and its continuants in modern European languages Syllabus in progress, to be appended soon |
