This course presents introduction to the studies of the ancient Egypt and Near East. The key subjects discussed are overviews of historical and social development in both areas, their geographical and topographical elements, selected archaeological and art historical questions. Students will learn the basis of scientific research as well as essential reference manuals and other literature on the discussed subjects. They will also gain up to date information about current issues in the Egyptological and ancient Near Eastern studies, and the ongoing archaeological excavations.

The grade for the exam will be determined by active participation in class and a 10-minute presentation (an essay of 8-10 pages, including references and citations) on a chosen archaeological artefakt from Egypt and the Near East.
