The course introduces participants to the essential topics addressed by Israel studies today, primarily related to
Israeli society, culture, gender, ethnicity, and religion. Particular emphasis is placed on the challenges
surrounding the integration of minorities and minority rights regarding the country's legislation.
The course will also look at Jewish society's current divisions along ethnic lines, specifically among Ashkenazim,
Sephardim and Mizrahim, and their implications on socio-cultural processes.
The phenomenon of intersectionality resulting from multiple otherings will be analyzed in the Israeli communal split
context. Representations of "the Others" in Israeli film and literature will be discussed. The course concludes with
a debate on possible future developments while considering social and demographic data and reflecting
changing realities in the 'New' Middle East, especially after signing the Abraham Accords.
The course includes a screening of commented excerpts of contemporary Israeli cinematography.

The course is provided by the Centre for the Study of the Holocaust and Jewish Literature, Faculty of Arts, Charles
University.

The course will be taught ONLINE, weekly (Tuesdays 9:10-10:50), starting October 3, 2023.
The language of instruction is English.
Consultations will be held after every class upon request.
