Anotace - angličtina
In this course, the students will get familiar with the recent approaches to flood risk assessment and with the
approaches to flood protection, control, and mitigation.

The students will get a comprehensive overview of the basic concepts of flood risk and detailed insight into its key
components – hazard, exposure, and vulnerability. The course will provide information on the methods of analysis
of the flood events and flood forecasting, and simulation of flood events. There are discussed recent concepts of
integrated flood protection, aimed at designing efficient flood protection measures with respect to the specific
requirements of a given environment with a focus on the retention potential of the landscape and the impact of
stream regulations and floodplain modifications on the flood course and consequences.
Special focus is paid to the legislative aspects of flood risk protection, and to the management of the flood risk in urbanized areas, in the context of Water Framework Directive and Czech Water Act. In the closing part of the course, there are discussed approaches for flood forecasting, flood protection in the urban areas, and the methods of assessment and modeling of the economic damage of flooding.

The theoretical lectures will be completed with a workshop, aimed at discussing the approaches to
flood risk management on the examples, taken from the management of the flood risk during the recent extreme
flood events.

A basic background in physical geography, surface water hydrology, or meteorology is necessary to understand the concepts of hydrological extremes and how to mitigate their effects. This lecture is not intended for students who have not taken such introductory courses, at least in a basic form.

Požadavky ke zkoušce - angličtina

The examination consist of (i) an essay, (ii) a presentation, and (iii) a test.

(i) The essay is prepared on the topic assigned by the course guarantor. Essays are based on cooperation in mini-teams of 2-3 students and are delivered as review papers, ca. 10 pages long. 

(ii) The findings from essays are presented and discussed in the closing workshop of the course. 

(iii) The written test verifies the knowledge from the course in a set of closed and open questions.

The grade is based on evaluating the three parts - written essay, interactive presentation, and test.
