Anatomy and physiology of the visual system; optical requirements for optimal vision; refractive errors: examination and correction; accomodation; central and peripheral vision; orbit; outer segment of the eye: lids, lacrimal apparatus, conjunctiva; cornea and sclera; vitreous humor and uvea; pathology of posterior segment of the eye and its linkage to systemic disorders; glaucoma: diagnostics and therapy; cataract: diagnostics and therapy; ocular trauma: superficial injuries of the eye and laceration of periocular tissues, blunt trauma, penetrating and perforating injuries, chemical burns, radiation injuries; strabismus: diagnostics and treatment; red eye, pain in ophthalmology, slow and acute visual loss: differential diagnostics; cooperation between ophthalmology and stomatology.

 1.      Anatomy and physiology of the visual system. Optical requirements for optimal vision, refractive errors, accomodation, color vision. Central and peripheral vision. Lids, lacrimal system. 

2.      Cornea, sclera, cataract, glaucoma.

3.      Uvea, vitreous, Disorders of optic disc. 

4.      General diseases and the eye. Orbit.

5.      Ocular trauma. Retinal disorders.

  Lectures complement or amplify compulsory literature. They inform about up-to-date trends in ophthalmology, improvements in diagnostics, treatment and prophylaxis of visual system disorders, that are not yet included into textbooks. Lectures advise of  

minimal knowledges in ophthalmology, that are essential for passing the final credit.

Practical classes consist of two parts. In the first part, students become acquainted with most important topics in ophthalmology  inclusive differential diagnostics and treatment methods in basic symptoms of ocular disorders in form of seminars. Seminars advise of  minimal knowledges in various topics, that are essential for passing the final examination. In the second part, students are devided into several small groups and work together with educators in general and special ambulancies and in-patient departments, where a typical cases are presented and the patients are examined/treated.

1.      Introduction to examination of patients in ophthalmology, general symptomatology of outer and anterior segment disorders. Practical classes: examination techniques in ophthtalmology.

2.      Sydrom of „red eye“. Practical classes: Work in general ambulance or in-patient department: application of eye drops and ointments, irrigation of the eye, first aid and  basic treatment methods.

3.      Ophthalmosurgery. Practical classes: demonstration of typical cases and examination/treatment of patients in general and special ambulancies and in-patient department.

4.      Strabismus and pedoophthalmology: examination and diagnostics. Practical classes: examination methods in strabology examination of patients with strabismus.

5.      Cooperation between ophthalmology and stomatology. Consultation of uncertain fields to the credit. Practical exam. Credit.
