Description of the Study Unit:
The aims of the study unit are that the student:
- is familiar with the basic methods of participatory social and community development work with elderly people
- is familiar with the use of participatory methods for child welfare and family work
- is familiar with the approaches to mental health and substance abuse in participatory social work and community
development work
The contents of the study module include:
- Deeper knowledge of the holistic/ecological approach to working on social exclusion
- Work with elderly people as a specific field for participatory social work and community development work –
specific working methods
- Participatory methods for work in the field of child and family welfare and work with young people at risk
- Mental health and substance abuse as a specific field for participatory social work and community development
work

Assignment guidelines
Week Eight to Twelve 2.25cr

The students are divided into small groups to work on particular chosen issues such as work with elderly people in
the community, substance abuse work with young people, family work in relation to child welfare. Each
(international) group should work on the chosen theme using literature recommended by the responsible teacher
and relevant specialists. They should also use local/national resources. The group should examine:
The analysis of the issue in relation to social exclusion/inclusion
Relevant national legislation
Service systems in the field
Working methods
The analysis should use a methodology based on the ecological approach (U. Bronfenbrenner); The methodology
should aim at empowerment and participation and use a ‘strengths based’ approach
Each group prepares a seminar paper on their findings to be shared in week thirteen. Assignment upload in week
twelve.
