Clinical genetics is the separate specialty of medicine that involves predominantly the diagnosis and management of hereditary disorders but, increasingly, is becoming relevant to many common diseases. Thus, it considers both genetic and environmental factors in etiology of many human diseases and defects. Clinical genetics refers to the application of genetics to clinical medical care. At the diagnostics, in determining the prognosis, in prevention (and therapy), it exploits knowledge of general (formal) and experimental genetics, methods of clinical genetic investigation and most up to date laboratory methods, primarily those in the field of molecular genetics, cytogenetics and molecular cytogenetics. Integral part of the specialty is the registry and the dispensary of diseases and developmental defects.
