Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology is a Ph.D. study programme that enables the individual profiling of students in both contemporary and traditional topics of ethnological and cultural anthropological research. With its synergistic connection of ethnological (i.e. dominantly historical) and cultural anthropological (i.e. dominantly social scientific) approaches, it represents the only programme of this type not only at Charles University, but also in the entire Czech Republic. A further key part of the programme is its emphasis on theoretical reflection on the study subject and the methodological requirement for qualitative ethnographic, museum and/or archival research.

Graduates of the Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology doctoral study programme possess detailed knowledge of both contemporary and traditional interpretation schemes and research topics in ethnological and anthropological disciplines. They are able to demonstrate the ability to creatively apply their acquired knowledge, not only in the disciplines of ethnology and cultural anthropology, but also in the broader field of relevant historical disciplines, social sciences and, to a certain extent, the humanities, including intangible cultural heritage. They have a thorough grounding in the ethnic, social, cultural, religious and linguistic diversity of human societies and the corresponding social, historical and political contexts, with an emphasis on the areas defined by the topic of their dissertation. They are familiar – theoretically and practically – with qualitative ethnographic, archival or museum research, or other ethnological and cultural anthropological methodological procedures, as the basic methodological tool of the programme, and are able to successfully design, implement, evaluate and create an appropriate written output from it.
