      Entrance examination: single round – oral interview

      Content and subject matter of entrance examination

      1. Discussion of the submitted dissertation proposal: 0–30 points
      2. Assessment of the applicant’s previous studies, research and other academic achievements, and translation practice: 0–15 points
      3. Assessment of the applicant’s familiarity with TS research, theory and methodology (related to the project and based on the applicant´s submitted list; at least 3 items must be related to Czechoslovak/Central European theories): 0–15 points

      Recommended dissertation topics:

      • Translation and reception of Czech literary or audio-visual works in foreign cultures
      • Translation as an exchange between major and minor cultures
      • The role of translation in the Anglicisation of Czech (formal, structural and semantic Anglicisms)
      • Risk in translation (with respect to translation quality, translation ethics and decision-making processes)
      • Translation as a „third code“ in a corpus-based perspective (study of a selected grammatical, lexical or stylistic problem)
      • Problems of legal and institutional translation
      • Translation into a foreign language (quality, reception, professional aspects)
      • Self-education, self-assessment and professional growth in translation or interpreting
      • Translation or interpreting technologies (a selected issue, e.g. professional aspects, quality, post-editing)
      • Remote interpreting

      The proposal should contain the following: a wider context of the selected topic, a basic theoretical framework, intended objectives and structure of the dissertation, formulation of the research question, and prospective methodological approaches. Defence of the proposal should demonstrate a basic overview of translation theory and research methodology in the field. Estimated scope of the project: 9,000-11,000 characters (including spaces).

      Applicants are welcome to present their own projects outside the research areas outlined above, as long as they focus on European languages and cultures; however, we strongly advise applicants to consult the Programme Director and the prospective supervisor on such topics in advance.

      Graduates are highly qualified specialists in the field of Translation Studies, capable of analysing linguistic and cultural phenomena of the relevant area in a scientific perspective and in relation to the target culture, while placing them in an international, social and historical context. They are familiar with research methodologies used in humanities, including the ability to critically analyse information resources. The graduates’ theoretical and application-oriented competences reach beyond the conventional framework of language and literature studies, and include number of interdisciplinary aspects of translation and interpreting (cultural, social, training-oriented, cognitive, ethical and technological, among others).
