Biomechanics is an interdisciplinary field of science which, based on the knowledge of anatomy and biochemistry, deals with mechanical structure and mechanical behaviour of living systems and their mutual mechanical interactions. A biophysical and engineering methodological approach to task solving is supported there by a great degree of knowledge of biological nature. Research is carried out at various levels of distinction, ranging from microbiomechanics (cell level) to living macro-systems (e.g. human biomechanics). Applications of biomechanics can be encountered in a number of areas of science and professional activities. Biomechanics conceived in this manner can be utilised not only in the field of basic research but also in a wide range of professional activities - e.g. in rehabilitation medicine, ergonomics, forensic and biomedical engineering, sports, etc. The Training Department of Charles University and the Czech Academy of Sciencces enables interdisciplinary education in doctoral studies on a wide scale and directed towards the specific application. Student’s degree programme is highly personalised in accordance with the needs of the chosen topic and focus. Emphasis is placed on students’ independent research activity within the context of team work co-operation during the course of study. Experimental facilities are provided by the laboratories of the specific training departments. Publishing activities are implemented in renowned scientific journals. An integral part of doctoral studies is active participation in congresses.

The admission exam is conducted in front of the committee in the form of an oral interview and it examines the student's competence for scientific work in the field.

      The committee assesses:

      1.      The quality of the dissertation project - the project must have the following structure:

introduction, literary research, aim/s of the work and based on the type and thematic focus of the project also hypothesis determination and methodology.

The maximum number of points for the entire item – 20 points.

      2.      Relation of the topic to the research focus of the workplace and especially to the expertise of the potential advisor and his/her research projects - there must be a clear consistency of the proposed topic and the research focus of the workplace and the advisor trainer (the candidate refers to a specific topic or even directly specific position of the current or forthcoming research project, contacts the potential advisor in advance and consult the planned dissertation project with him/her, the project specifically builds up on previous research activities of the workplace).

Information about advisors can be found at  https://is.cuni.cz/studium/eng/skolitel/index.php?do=skolitele

The maximum number of points for the entire item – 20 points.

      3.      Previous professional activities in the field of biomechanics - evaluated are previous activities related to the project, preferably publishing activities - impact journal - 10 points, SCOPUS - 8 points, ERIH - 6 points, peer-reviewed journal and active presentation at a student scientific conference or another scientific conference - 4 points.

The full number of points will be received by the candidate if s/he is the first author; if s/he is the second co-author then s/he will receive 75% if s/he is a third co-author, s/he will receive 50% for the respective item and if s/he is the fourth or more co-author s/he will receive 25%.

The maximum number of points for the entire item – 10 points.

      4.      The quality of project presentation and response to questions from the committee members.

The maximum number of points for the entire item – 10 points.

Each member of the committee evaluates Paragraph 1 by a point assessment in the range of 0-20, Paragraph 2 in the range of 0-20 points, Paragraph 3 in the range of 0-10 points, Paragraph 4 in the range of 0-10 points. Therefore, the maximum number of points from one assessor is 60. The arithmetic mean is calculated from the points assigned by the individual committee members. Rounding will be implemented to the nearest integer - for the values 0.0-0.49 down and for the values 0.50-0.99 up. The order of the candidates will be determined in accordance with the final score. The minimum acceptance threshold is 30 points.

Literature is recommended by individual potential advisors. This is based on the expected focus of the dissertation and on the field of biomechanics in which the work will be carried out. The current list of advisors is located at https://is.cuni.cz/studium/eng/skolitel/index.php?do=skolitele (use the filter in the study programme entry and enter “Biomechanics 4BM”). The choice of a potential advisor can be consulted at the Department of Science or with the Chairman of the Biomechanics Board of Directors or with the head of the specific training department.

Graduates of doctoral studies of biomechanics as an interdisciplinary field can find their application mainly in the sphere of science and research, in education and in the area of sports, in physiotherapeutic workplaces and in accredited laboratories. Another important area of application is the sphere of state administration and business sphere and also the field of expert opinions.
