The aim of this course is to provide students with a brief overview of 18th and 19th century German literature in a European context (the Enlightenment, the Sturm und Drang movement, the German Classics and Romanticism as specific movements in German literature, the pre-March period, Biedermeier and Realism). An integral part of the course is the explanation of the main literary historical concepts (Aufklärung, Empfindsamkeit, Sturm und Drang, Klassik, Romantik, Vormärz, Biedermeier, Realismus) and the interpretation of the developmental tendencies of the prevailing literary types and genres. Literary phenomena are presented against the historical, philosophical and cultural background of the 18th and 19th centuries, including a survey of various interpretations of literary-historical development and the main aesthetic theories. Emphasis is placed on the so-called Weimar classics (Goethe and Schiller), the various stages of Romanticism (Jena, Heidelberg, Berlin, the so-called Swabian School), and the basic specific features of German so-called poetic realism. Seminar work will focus on selected texts of the period (excerpts from philosophical, aesthetic and literary theoretical texts) and on the analysis of poetic, prose and dramatic works. The course covers the following topics: the philosophical foundations of the Enlightenment, rationalism and sentimentalism as the main trends in Enlightenment literature; lyrical works, the Enlightenment theatre (Gottsched, Lessing), the influence of sentimentalism (Klopstock), the novel in the German Enlightenment (Wieland, Schnabel, Gellert); the literature of the Sturm und Drang movement, the philosophical conception of the movement (J. G. Herder), the young Goethe and Schiller, the drama of the Sturm und Drang movement, the work of G. A. Goethe and Schiller, Weimar as a centre of cultural life, classical drama, joint artistic activity of Goethe and Schiller; German literature of early, high and late Romanticism, its philosophical basis and specific aesthetic theories and genres; important representatives of Romanticism: The Schlegel brothers, Novalis, Wackenroder, Tieck, Brentano, Arnim, the Grimm brothers, Eichendorff, Hoffmann, Chamisso, Fouqué, the so-called "Romanticism". The literature of the Biedermeier and pre-March periods: lyric (Mörike, Droste-Hülshoff), epic (Gotthelf, Stifter); drama of the Biedermeier period (Hebbel, Grillparzer), Viennese folk theatre: Raimund, Nestroy); specifics of German realism - poetic realism, philosophical trends that influenced it (positivism, materialism, Marxism, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer), basic features and theories of poetic realism (Vischer, Heyse); novels of poetic (Freytag, Keller, Raabe) and critical realism (Fontane); novels, short stories (Storm, Keller, Meyer) and lyricism in the period of realism (Storm, Meyer, Liliencron).

Cílem předmětu je zprostředkovat studentům stručný přehled o německé literatuře 18. a 19. století v evropském kontextu (osvícenství, hnutí Bouře a vzdor, německá klasika a romantika jako specifické proudy německé literatury, dále doba předbřeznová, biedermeier a realismus). Nedílnou součástí kursu je vysvětlení hlavních literárněhistorických pojmů (Aufklärung, Empfindsamkeit, Sturm und Drang, Klassik, Romantik, Vormärz, Biedermeier, Realismus) a výklad vývojových tendencí převažujících literárních druhů a žánrů. Literární jevy jsou podávány na historickém, filosofickém a kulturním pozadí 18. a 19. století, včetně přehledu různých výkladů literárně-historického vývoje a hlavních estetických teorií. Důraz ve výkladu je kladen na tzv. Výmarskou klasiku (Goethe a Schiller), jednotlivé etapy romantismu (Jena, Heidelberg, Berlín, tzv. Švábská škola) a na základní specifické rysy německého tzv. poetického realismu. Práce v semináři se zaměří na vybrané texty daného období (ukázky z filozofických, estetických a literárně teoretických textů) a na rozbor básnických, prozaických a dramatických děl. Předmět obsahuje následující témata: filosofické základy osvícenství, racionalismus a sentimentalismus jako hlavní směry literatury osvícenství; lyrická tvorba, osvícenské divadlo (Gottsched, Lessing), vliv sentimentalismu (Klopstock), román v německém osvícenství (Wieland, Schnabel, Gellert); literatura hnutí Sturm und Drang, filosofická koncepce hnutí (J. G. Herder), mladý Goethe a Schiller, drama hnutí Sturm und Drang, tvorba G. A. Bürgera; Výmarská klasika: Goethe a Schiller, Výmar jako centrum kulturního života, klasické drama, společná umělecká aktivita Goetha a Schillera; německy psaná literatura raného, vrcholného a pozdního romantismu, její filosofický základ a specifické estetické teorie a žánry; významní představitelé romantismu: bratři Schlegelové, Novalis, Wackenroder, Tieck, Brentano, Arnim, bratři Grimmové, Eichendorff, Hoffmann, Chamisso, Fouqué, tzv. Švábská škola); literatura epochy biedermeieru a doby předbřeznové: lyrika (Mörike, Droste-Hülshoff), epika (Gotthelf, Stifter); drama epochy biedermeieru (Hebbel, Grillparzer), vídeňské lidové divadlo: Raimund, Nestroy); specifika německého realismu – poetický realismus, filosofické směry, které ho ovlivnily (positivismus, materialismus, marxismus, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer), základní rysy a teorie poetického realismu (Vischer, Heyse); romány poetického (Freytag, Keller, Raabe) a kritického realismu (Fontane); novely, povídky (Storm, Keller, Meyer) a lyrika v období realismu(Storm, Meyer, Liliencron).

docházka, po domácí přípravě aktivní práce s texty v semináři;
rozbor se zaměřuje na tematickou, kompoziční a jazykovou komponentu díla, v epice na narativní strukturu, v dramatu na způsob výstavby textu a konfiguraci postav a zohledňuje historické pozadí a filosoficko-estetické proudy dobového myšlení, které tvoří základ literární periodizace (osvícenství, klasicismus, klasika, preromantické hnutí);
vhodná je zmínka literárně-kritického a čtenářského ohlasu, případně filmové či moderní divadelní adaptace;
před skončením kursu (nejpozději do 15.05.2024) odevzdává každý jeho frekventant krátký písemný referát (max. tři strany) k vybranému textu. Téma lze do 15.03.2024 zvolit z následujících možností:
