The course includes work with a polarization microscope, optical methods of study of rock-forming minerals (determination of refractive index, angle of extinguishment, birefringence), isotropic and anisotropic minerals, determination of optical properties of uniaxial and biaxial minerals at parallel and crossed polarizers, and identification of the most common rock-forming minerals.

- Mikroskopické studium minerálů pod jedním nikolem (štěpnost, reliéf, index lomu, tvar, velikost zrn, uzavřeniny). / Microscopic study of minerals under one nikol (cleavage, relief, refractive index, shape, grain size, inclusions).

- Optické studium minerálů pod zkříženými nikoly (zhášení, interferenční barvy, dvojlom). / Optical study of minerals under crossed nikols (extinction, interference colors, birefringence).
