The aim of the four-semester course is to develop linguistic skills necessary to understand and interprete an unknown Latin text of medium difficulty (with the help of a dictionary).

Requirements to the exam -

Active participation in lessons (max. 3 absences during the semester), successful passing of ordinary tests, successful passing of the final test (credit test) and successful completion of the final colloquium.

The starting material for the colloquium is a corpus of texts of at least 12,600 characters, compiled by the student and approved by the examiner. In the colloquium, after a short preparation and without a dictionary, the student will demonstrate knowledge of vocabulary and grammatical structure and the ability to apply this knowledge in the interpretation of the text. For an overview of the required grammatical competence, see the syllabus. The corpus of texts must include the following time or genre areas: medieval (at least 1,800 characters), modern (at least 1,800 characters), biblical or liturgical text (at least 1,800 characters), quantitative poetry (at least 10 verses), syllabotonic or syllabic poetry (at least 10 verses).

A reliable ability to read an unknown Latin text fluently and correctly is a prerequisite for obtaining credit and is also tested in the colloquium.

The student must submit the corpus of texts for approval no later than one month after the beginning of the semester in which the examination is scheduled.
