This year's theme of the seminar will aim to trace the reflection of the laughter culture in the visual arts through selected examples of artworks. Laughter culture, especially popular culture, played an irreplaceable role in the Middle Ages and early modern period as a kind of "valve" and relativisation of the established social order, strict morality, social conventions and unchanging social hierarchy. In the face of the physicality associated with the inevitability of death, the popular classes in particular regularly exempted themselves psychologically from these established orders and 'serious' official ceremonies through various festivals, especially carnivals. In these, all hierarchical relations, privileges, norms or laws were temporarily abolished. The weight of human destiny and all that is horrific was thus ridiculed for a time and often through certain visual representations and thus relativised. Laughter was at the opposite pole of social life, but it was inextricably linked to culture of all classes, often as an expression of a reviving liberating force, an awareness of the cyclical renewal of life that already occurs on earth, i.e. in nature. Carnivals, theatre and, to some extent, the visual arts in particular fulfilled this function. In the field of literary studies, one of the most important historians of the 20th century, Mikhail Mikhailovich Bakhtin, laid the foundations for the study of laughter culture with his book François Rabelais and the Folk Culture of the Middle Ages and Renaissance (published in English in 2007 and 2015).
Topics that fall within the framework of this study in art history can be: - depictions of an inverted world (Bučovice, Hustopeče nad Bečvou) - depictions and staging (descriptions) of festivities - weddings, carnivals, carnivals (Arcimboldo; L. Rvačovský: The Clash of Carnival and Lent) - green men, wild men, hunchbacks, fools, masks, mascarons, composite heads, caricatures (Kutná Hora, Horšovský Týn, Žirovnice, Seb. Brandt: Ship of Fools and the inspiration of his woodcuts, Arcimboldo) - grotesque decoration, borders in mural and book painting/graphics - court jesters - depictions of the devil, hell, the grotesque, proverbs - Dances of Death (Loreto, Dresden - the gate of Jiří Bradatý, H. Holbein), depiction of the Grim Reaper in the form of "living" skeletons, subject of the Parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus The seminar focuses on Renaissance art, students prepare their presentations on a selected topic, and excursions to monuments and galleries are part of the class.
