The course is designed for students of journalism studying for their BA or MA degree. It is focused on work with newspaper/mazazine/online articles and audio or video pieces coming from a wide range of mass media. The objective of the course is to expand students' vocabulary in terms of journalistic jargon and terminology related to news reporting, to improve students' speaking and writing skills, and to achieve accuracy in grammatical structures and pronunciation.
The study materials used in the classes are solely for the use of the students of the JLB009 course. Any circulation of the materials is prohibited. Students who need B2 grammar practice as well as an introduction into the more specialized vocabulary of journalistic English, as well as basic English academic skills, are offered the lower course of English for Social Sciences I (JLB 053) in the winter term and English for Social Sciences II (JLB 054) in the summer term, Tuesday 17-18.20 in #110 room of the Hollar building. https://fsv.cuni.cz/studium/vyuka-jazyku/hodnoceni-jazykove-dovednosti Last update: Prošková Alena, Mgr. Following breaking news and current affairs, using original English resources. Summarizing news items in writing as part of home assignments. Various follow-up activities to teach correct pronunciation, to repeatedly use new terms in appropriate contexts, and to remind students of some tricky grammar features. Work with audio/video materials. Students are advised and encouraged to keep an individual record of their language learning in order to reflect on their progress. It is essential that students get into the habit of regular private study in order to support and consolidate their learning.

Each session will include a weekly news bulletin prepared by pairs/trios of students (four ca. 40-second "ready-to-teach" news items to be submitted into the shared Google document by Mon 8 PM for Tue seminars, or by Wed 8 PM for Thur seminars) - please sign up for a particular date and comply with the schedule to score 10 points towards your winter term credit (minus 10 for failing to meet the deadline). B2 level. See the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) or http://www.examenglish.com/leveltest/grammar_level_test.htm. Please check your email in the lead-up to the course registration. Based on your English language Scio entrance test score, some students will be recommended a lower, preparatory "English for Social Sciences I" - tailor-made paralel group for future journalists, Tuedays from 17 to 18.20 in #110 Room of the Hollar bldng, taught by Mgr. Alena Prošková. Starting on September ..... , 12:00, students who need more B2 grammar practice (as well as an introduction into the more specialized vocabulary of social sciences and academic skills in English) can register for the non-compulsory lower "English for Social Sciences" - Angličtina pro sociální vědy I (JLB 053) and take the specialized "English for Journalists" course in the following academic year.
