Annotation

English

The course is designed for students of journalism studying for their BA or MA degree. It is focused on work with newspaper/mazazine/online articles and audio or video pieces coming from a wide range of mass media. The objective of the course is to expand students' vocabulary in terms of journalistic jargon and terminology related to news reporting, to improve students' speaking and writing skills, and to achieve accuracy in grammatical structures and pronunciation.
The study materials used in the classes are solely for the use of the students of the JLB009 course. Any circulation of the materials is prohibited.

Students who need B2 grammar practice as well as an introduction into the
more specialized vocabulary of journalistic English, as well as basic English academic skills, are offered the lower course of English for Social Sciences I (JLB
053) in the winter term and English for Social Sciences II (JLB 054) in
the summer term, Tuesday 17-18.20 in #110 room of the Hollar building.

Kurz je určen pro studenty oboru žurnalistika - především bakaláře. Je zaměřen na práci s autentickými ukázkami textu, audia i videa ze široké škály médií, rozšíření slovní zásoby odborného jazyka a rozvinutí profesních komunikativních schopností.
Materiály poskytnuté studentům a používané při výuce slouží výhradně ke studijním účelům pro zapsané posluchače kurzu JLB009. Nejsou určeny k dalšímu šíření.
Méně zkušení angličtináři si mohou zapsat nepovinný předstupeň odborné angličtiny -
Angličtina pro sociální vědy I (JLB 053) v ZS a Angličtina pro
sociální vědy II (JLB 054) v LS, kde si budou mít příležitost
vylepšit gramatiku, začít pracovat na budování odborné slovní zásoby a
také si osvojit základy anglických akademických dovedností - úterý 17-18.20 v učebně č. 110 budovy Hollar.

The course is designed to considerably improve reading and listening comprehension of English in mass media while, at the same time, substantially enhancing students' own professional spoken and written English for usage in mass media.

Teaching methods

English

Following breaking news and current affairs, using original English resources. Summarizing news items in writing as part of home assignments. Various follow-up activities to teach correct pronunciation, to repeatedly use new terms in appropriate contexts, and to remind students of some tricky grammar features. Work with audio/video materials.

Students will participate in a variety of learning methods in a mixture of dynamics - individual, pair work, working in larger groups, full class sessions. The teacher will frequently be in the role of facilitator. There is a heavy emphasis on oral communication in this course.

Students are advised and encouraged to keep an individual record of their language learning in order to reflect on their progress. It is essential that students get into the habit of regular private study in order to support and consolidate their learning.

Průběžné sledování aktuálních zpráv v angličtině a písemné shrnutí vybrané události do každé hodiny. Pestrá škála navazujících aktivit v semináři - upevní správnou výslovnost, umožní opakované aktivní použití nových výrazů v odpovídajícím kontextu a připomene pokročilejší gramatické a stylistické jevy. Práce s video/audio materiály ve dvojicích či skupinách. Formální jazykový registr a aktivní používání pokročilejších spojovacích výrazů v písemném i ústním projevu.

Vyučující je často v roli koordinátora, v kurzu se klade velký důraz na komunikativní dovednosti.
Studenti jsou opakovaně povzbuzováni k reflexi nad tím, co jim v osvojování jazyka pomáhá, a k pravidelnosti v samostudiu, které je pro zaznamenání pokroku nezbytné.

Each session will include a weekly news bulletin prepared by pairs/trios of students (four ca. 40-second "ready-to-teach" news items to be submitted into the shared Google document by Mon 8 PM for Tue seminars, or by Wed 8 PM for Thur seminars) - please sign up for a particular date and comply with the schedule to score 10 points towards your winter term credit (minus 10 for failing to meet the deadline).

Based on your English language Scio entrance test score, some students will be recommended a lower, preparatory "English for Social Sciences I" - tailor-made paralel group for future journalists, Tuedays from 17 to 18.20 in #110 Room of the Hollar bldng, taught by Mgr. Alena Prošková.

Starting on September ..... , 12:00,  students who need more B2 grammar practice (as well as an introduction into the more specialized vocabulary of social sciences and academic skills in English) can register for the non-compulsory lower "English for Social Sciences" - Angličtina pro sociální vědy I (JLB 053) and take the specialized "English for Journalists" course in the following academic year.

Od .....  září 2024 12:00 si méně zkušení angličtináři mohou sami zapisovat nepovinný předstupeň odborné angličtiny -
