The subject Microbiology -practical classes is a follow-up subject for the subject Microbiology. Emphasis in this course is primarily placed on methodological approaches chosen in microbiological laboratories. During the study of this course, the student will gain an overview and practical skills regarding methodologies that relate to both the issue of pharmaceutical microbiology and medical microbiology. The aim of the course is to prepare students to develop the knowledge gained during further study and apply it in medical practice.

Learning Outcomes of the subject Microbiology - Practical Classes Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to: - Explain and apply the principles of sterilization and disinfection, distinguish naturally sterile and non-sterile clinical specimens, understand biosafety levels (BSL), and work safety with a laminar flow cabinet. - Assess microbial contamination of environments and surfaces using swab methods and evaluate the correctness of hand-disinfection procedures. - Perform basic microscopic techniques, including preparation of wet mounts and staining procedures, and identify microorganisms using Gram staining method. - Describe cultivation principles, select appropriate cultivation conditions, characterize microbial colonies macroscopically, and perform basic biochemical tests (catalase, oxidase, KOH test). - Define the term antibiotic drug, classify antimicrobial susceptibility testing methods, and explain shortcuts MIC and MBC. - Evaluate antimicrobial susceptibility using disk diffusion method and broth microdilution methods, including interpretation in accordance with EUCAST guidelines. - Identify clinically relevant Gram-positive and Gram-negative cocci and rods, and apply biochemical identification techniques, and yeast identification using auxanograms. - Apply basic diagnostic approaches for fungal and parasitic infections, including cultivation of fungi, microscopic identification of fungal agents, and detection of helminth infections.
