Annotation -
The elective subject Immunological Methods extends the knowledge in the field of immunology and the application of immunology in practice. It provides students with an overview of laboratory analyses and enables the assessment of specific parameters of immune reactivity under laboratory conditions using simple methods. The course is intended to contribute to the understanding of the fundamental importance of knowledge and functioning of the immune system not only in pharmaceutical practice but also in everyday life.

The course ends with a credit. To pass it, 100% participation in the exercises, presentation of the assigned topic and successful completion of the credit test are required.

Learning outcomes

The elective subject, Immunological Methods, expands knowledge in the field of immunology and its practical applications. It provides students with an overview of laboratory analyses and enables them to evaluate specific immune reactivity parameters in laboratory conditions using simple methods. The course aims to contribute to the understanding of the fundamental importance of immune system functioning, not only in pharmaceutical practice but also in everyday life.

After completing the course, students will be able to explain and use the following terms in the correct context: vaccination, attenuated vs. inactivated vaccine, recombinant vaccine, adjuvant, cellular vs. humoral immunity, phagocytosis, neutrophil granulocyte, macrophage, respiratory burst, lysozyme, C-reactive protein (CRP), complement, immunoglobulin, precipitation, agglutination, ELISA, immunofluorescence, serological tests, monoclonal antibodies, CD markers, flow cytometry, HLA antigens, allotype, histocompatibility

Learning outcomes:

Based on the acquired knowledge and skills, students will:

Ø  Understand the principles of vaccination – explain vaccine types, their mechanisms of action, and be familiar with the current vaccination program.

Ø  Evaluate phagocytic activity – perform and interpret the assessment of phagocyte activity.

Ø  Analyze nonspecific humoral immunity – conduct tests to determine lysozyme and CRP activity and explain their diagnostic significance.

Ø  Apply immunochemical methods – identify and quantify immunoglobulins in biological samples.

Ø  Perform serological tests – detect specific antibodies and antigens using methods such as ELISA, immunofluorescence, and others.

Ø  Identify cell surface markers – describe their role in immune processes and apply methods for their detection.

Ø  Determine histocompatibility antigens – understand their biological significance and apply methods for their analysis in laboratory diagnostics.
