This thesis discusses the poetic work of three translingual anglophone authors: the American poet of Ukrainian origin Ilya Kaminsky; the poet May Wong, who grew up in Singapore and is now resident in Ireland, and the American poet Li-Young Lee, born in Indonesia to Chinese parents. Translingual poetry is defined as a kind of poetry that is written in a language that is not the author’s mother tongue. Since romanticism writing poetry has been associated with speaking and achieving perfection in one’s native language. This view is challenged by the work of translingual writers who can be imagined as nomadic subjects (Rosi Braidotti) operating in transcultural environments. Different cultures have different concepts of what constitutes a poem and what poetry is. From that perspective, the work of translingual authors can be seen as a type of multifaceted writing that emerges out of more than one tradition and combines various influences. This thesis will analyze how that process unfolds itself in the work of the selected authors by focusing on the ways in which the poets work with poetic form, genre elements and language.
