Zásady pro vypracování

The MA thesis will focus on Czech polar questions, especially on their syntactic and semantic analysis. In the theoretical part I will introduce the topic of polar questions in general and I will describe their formal and semantic properties. From the formal point of view, I will focus on word order (esp. on the position of the main verb) and intonation. From the semantic point of view, I will focus on the semantic meaning of polar questions (Hamblin, 1973) as well as on the various shades of their pragmatic meaning - primarily on the biases of the speaker producing the question (Sudo, 2013). I will characterize polar questions with negation and their possible interpretations. Apart from that, particles typical for these questions (e. g. “náhodou”, “snad” and “co(ž)pak”) will be described. I aim to propose an explicit syntactic and semantic analysis of Czech polar questions using the generative and formal semantic approach. The analyses will follow, among others, the theory of Repp (2013), who suggested that some pragmatic aspects of question meaning can be expressed formally through word order and particles.
In the practical part, Czech polar questions will be investigated experimentally using the naturalness rating task. I will concentrate on the relation between formal aspects (word order, position of negation, presence of indefinite pronouns, preceding context) and semantic aspects (speaker’s bias). The goal of the experiment will be to assess the validity and accurateness of the proposed syntactic and semantic analyses.
