| In my bachelor's thesis, I plan to focus on the unequal representation of the two major world varieties of English in textbooks utilized for teaching children from ages 12 to 15. I aim to prove that this disproportionate manner of teaching does not mirror the exposure of students to the American culture, which is overwhelmingly present in popular music, films, and social media. I will support this claim by mapping out the history and tradition of ESL teaching in the Czech Republic, providing examples from frequently used textbooks, and conducting a survey among the children themselves to explicate their views on the issue. The survey will take the form of a questionnaire with both multiple-choice options and open answers and will be administered at at least three different public middle schools in the Pardubice region of the Czech Republic. Through these methods, the thesis will try to ascertain whether more inclusion is needed in current teaching materials and practices, as the current representation of American English may not be sufficient for life in today’s diverse world and might not cater towards the growing need of children to understand and successfully implement non-British expressions into their vocabularies.
