The focus of this research project is on industrial heritage and its potential energy for urban regeneration. The relationship between cities and industry has been subject of research ever since the process of industrialization begun in the 18th century. The interest around it has only grown after industry started to migrate—a process known as deindustrialization—around the mid 20th century. This relationship became the point of convergence between pressing questions regarding how to cope with the socio-economic void left by industrial activities and what to do with its physical remains. The present thesis is set to expand on this topic through the analysis of a historic industrial district in Mexico City known as Atlampa. The area’s value and potential are palpable; however, due to unclear reasons, it remains mostly abandoned, including protected historic buildings. The aim of this project will be to explore alternatives through which Atlampa’s industrial heritage could be instrumental in the district’s regeneration and reintegration to the city. With this purpose, explorative research will be conducted through related literature and direct observations in order to depict a comprehensive image of the area’s current situation. The core of the project will include a comparative analysis between former industrial districts with similar characteristics in order to study the urban planning approach they have implemented and see if these strategies could be applied to Atlampa.
