This bachelor thesis deals with the issues concerning artworks from the perspective of New Materialism and, as a specific example, the visual artworks, texts, and quotations by William S. Burroughs. New Materialist ontology as a reaction to ontological dualism provides a philosophical ground for investigating the work of art as an animated thing – a creature – rather than a passive, inanimate object. This not only provides possibly creative concepts concerning works of art, but it also introduces new possibilities in philosophy to conceptualize interactions between organic and inorganic matter. Partly with respect to the prerequisites of the theoretical backgrounds of this thesis, the main goal is not to provide another definition of the category “art”, but rather to show the blurred and overlapping edges of the categories we use when we are being confronted with works of art. In the thesis, this is shown on the works of William S. Burroughs, whose approach to art and potentially “everything“ surrounding a person, can be seen as a material turn in the practice of the artist. |
