Zásady pro vypracování
Second language (L2) learning during study abroad is an area of second language acquisition which has been extensively studied in the past few decades, the same can be said for L2 pragmatics. However, combination of these two areas started to attract more attention only at the beginning of the 21st century when studying abroad became more common. Previous studies showed that study abroad context is beneficial for the development of L2 pragmatic comprehension (Barron 2003; Soler 2017; Taguchi 2016), but also that the development may be influenced by various factors, such as language socialisation and intensity of interaction (Barron 2003; Iwasaki 2010, 2011; Taguchi 2008, 2011, 2016; Soler 2017). The present thesis focuses exclusively on acquisition of the natural and situation appropriate means for expressing the speech act of refusal and explores the connection between its acquisition and extracurricular activities of the students such as having a part-time job, being a part of the school club etc.
The introductory part of the thesis will provide a basic orientation in the field of L2 pragmatics and pragmatic competence, and present the theory of the speech act of refusal (Beebe et. al., 1990; Eslami 2010, Wierzbicka 1997). It shall also provide insight into L2 pragmatic competence acquisition within the larger study abroad context and introduce the key studies in this area with a special stress on the used methodology. Such overview shall provide the methodological foundations for the following research.
The main part shall present an original research, starting with the definition of the research questions and hypotheses, following with introduction and explanation of the chosen methodology (Barron 2003, Ishihara 2010). It shall present and comment also the used method of survey i.e. the scaled-response questionnaires evaluating the degree of appropriateness of the refusal on the Likert scale (Barron 2003; Culpeper et. al. 2018; Ishihara 2010), as well as statistically evaluated gained results.
The final part shall asses acquired results and define the underlying tendencies and attempt to account for them.
