Transitivity is one of the key linguistic phenomena, which has been treated in virtually all linguistic traditions analyzing various languages of the world. Its central standing in the Japanese language description can be demonstrated for example by the fact that its Japanese equivalent tadósei has been coined by Fumihiko Ócuki who clearly felt the need for the term even before adoption of English language based approach to grammar (in Kónihonbunten, 1889). Japanese disposes of several specific means related to transitivity such as the causative construction or morphological marking of transitivity etc. The specific character of these traits as well as the system as a whole should be arguably best apparent in contrast to a different system. That is why the main aim of the present paper is to contrast transitivity, its granularity and means of expression in Japanese and Ainu language.
The introductory part of the thesis will present the phenomenon of transitivity, key approaches to its definition (lexical, syntactic, discourse based), its treatment in Japanese linguistics and possible ways of its manifestation. It shall also provide a basic orientation in the typological classification of the two contrasted languages.
The main part of the thesis shall explain the methodological foundations of the research such as the adopted view of linguistic categorization, the phenomenon of granularity and construction grammar approach. The core of the main section shall present thorough and structured survey of transitivity manifestation in the two contrasted languages.
The closing shall provide synthesis of the contrastive study and attempt an interpretation of the results for example referring to the grammaticalization theory.
