ANOTACE

Magisterská práce si klade za cíl nahlédnout konflikt v Severním Irsku skrze optiku privátního prostoru a zkoumá způsob, jakým je téma reflektováno v severoirské poezii v posledních čtyřiceti letech. Práce vychází z předpokladu, že domy a domovy nejsou pouze privátním prostorem, ale odráží se v nich okolní svět. Jako názorný příklad byly vybrány dvě severoirské básnířky, Medbh McGuckian a Leontia Flynn, které zastupují dvě různé básnické generace, ale věnují se mapování stejného prostoru. Jejich tvorba bude zasazena do kontextu severoirské poezie během období konfliktu a po Velkopáteční dohodě.
McGuckian se ve své poezii snaží porozumět hranici mezi osobní a veřejnou sférou (Wills 1993), zatímco Flynn, podobně jako další autoři poezie po Velkopáteční dohodě obecně, se snaží nalézt své místo v kontextu konfliktu. Při vyjadřování svého postoje čerpá ze zkušeností, které získala odchodem z domova a cestováním, což jí umožnilo nechat za sebou vzpomínky na dětství během konfliktu (Heidemann 2016). Obě básnířky o konfliktu píší z hlediska rozdílu mezi soukromým a veřejným prostorem. Konflikt totiž byl a stále je součástí běžného života a osobních dějin obyvatel Severního Irska. Jinými slovy, náš osobní prostor je neodmyslitelně utvářen a ovlivňován situací za zdmi našich domovů. Neustálé prolínání těchto dvou světů je umožněno postupným vývojem technologií a médií, které krizi přenáší přímo do našeho soukromí a my se tak stáváme svědky násilí bez toho, aniž bychom se ho sami museli účastnit.
Práce se sice zabývá tvorbou básnířek během a po konfliktu, ale nepřipisuje jí přímý politický záměr, spíše se soustředí na vztah mezi vnitřním a vnějším světem a v kontextu severoirské společnosti a poezie ukazuje, jak konflikt setřel rozdíl mezi soukromým a veřejným životem (Hanna 2015). Hlavním cílem je zkoumání prostoru v tvorbě básnířek a následné mapování jeho rozličnosti a mnohovrstevnatosti. Ten zahrnuje jak prostor místně vnější oblasti, včetně topografie města, krajiny a domu, tak osobní rovinu vnitřního prostoru, která sestává z pojmů domova a osobní identity. Práce se snaží dokázat, že – navzdory ironickému tvrzení Flynn, že Severní Irsko „Se (ne)Identifikuje“ s problémy způsobenými krizí (Flynn 2008) – autorky budou na téma konfliktu chtě nechtě narážet, jelikož byl formativní součástí jejich životů.
Zahrnutý kritický rámec čerpá z Foucaulta, Lefebvrea a Bachelarda. Jejich formulace, společně s dalšími aspekty teorií prostoru a místa budou sloužit jako podklad pro analýzu vybraných básní. Na závěr bude zmíněn socio-politický kontext, jelikož abychom porozuměli do konečných důsledků vlivu, jaký měl konflikt nejen na jednotlivé životy, je nezbytné si uvědomit, že domácí prostředí má synekdochický vztah k širšímu politickému a společenskému kontextu.

ABSTRACT

The aim of the thesis is to observe the Northern Irish conflict from the vantage point of domestic space as it is reflected in Northern-Irish poetry of the last 40 years. The thesis builds on the notion that houses and homes are not simply private places but images of the outside world. To illustrate this premise, the works of two Northern Irish poets have been selected: Medbh McGuckian and Leontia Flynn. Divided by time, but not space, their poetry is to be placed into the context of Northern Irish poetry at the time of the Troubles and the post-Agreement period.
McGuckian´s poetry is engaged with making a sense of the distinction between public and private spheres (Wills 1993), whereas Flynn´s poetry, and post-Agreement poetry in general, shows signs of attempts to discover and establish her place within the context of the Troubles. In formulating her stance, Flynn relies on a perspective gained by leaving home and memories of growing up during the Troubles behind and travelling abroad (Heidemann 2016). Both poets write about the Troubles in light of the division between private and public spheres, thus illustrating how the violent politics have been part of Northern Irish people´s personal history and everyday lives. In other words, our homes are inherently shaped and influenced by the events outside the walls. Such dialectics has been facilitated by the gradual rise of technology and media that bring the crisis directly to the living-room and allow us to witness the violence without actually being present on the streets.
The thesis treats both poets in the context of the Troubles but does not ascribe them with a political agenda; it rather focuses on the relationship between the private and public space and illustrates how the Troubles have transformed the domestic into political and the private into public in Northern Irish society and poetry (Hanna 2015). The main objective is to explore the representation of space in McGuckian´s and Flynn´s poetry and to recognize its various layers or zones. These range from the outer-local zone, which includes the topography of the city, landscape and house, to the inner-individual zone that encompasses the concepts of home and personal/communal identity. The thesis will argue that despite Flynn’s ironic point that “N. I.” can be the short for either Northern Irish or “N[ot] I[nterested]” (Flynn 2008), the authors cannot avoid the conflict which has been a formative part of their life experience.
A critical frame will be established, drawing on Foucault, Lefebvre and Bachelard, and various aspects of the theory of space and place will be used as a backbone for the analysis of the selected poems. As a conclusion, a socio-political context is to be addressed to provide a final piece of the argument: it is impossible to understand the impact of the Troubles on individual lives as well as community without acknowledging that domestic environment has a synecdochal relationship with its broader political and social context.
